The Saronic EPANACYCTACY ‘21

EPANACYCTACI ‘21

An original floating exhibition from the Collections of the National Historical Museum was transported during the summer until September by the sailing educational vessel "Mania" of the Naval High School of the Maria Tsakos Foundation. The vessel made stops in many ports of insular Greece, including the islands of Argosaronicos, Spetses, Hydra, Poros and Aegina.

EPANACYCTACI '21, as the floating exhibition of the relics of 1821 was called, had been postponed twice due to the coronavirus pandemic. In the end, however, it was held on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the 1821 Revolution.

The beginning was made from the port of Chios on June 26, followed by 20 islands in total. Among them Lesvos, Psara, Oinousses, Lemnos, Samothraki, Agios Eustratios, Skyros, Andros, Syros, the Argosaronic islands. The final stop was the port of Piraeus. Wherever and whenever there was reason and of course it was allowed depending on the sea area, the exhibition was flanked by units of the Navy and the Coast Guard, as well as private escort vessels.

Purpose of the exhibition

The primary and central purpose of the EPANACYCTACI '21 floating exhibition was to highlight the naval race of '21 through authentic relics from the Museum's Collections and with the help of digital applications.

The cross from the ship of Miaoulis, the abduction from the cannon of Kanaris, naval weapons, various philhellenic objects dedicated to the fight, were just some of what the visitors of the exhibition saw.

The narrative of the exhibition begins in the Aegean in the years preceding the Revolution and describes the first steps in the creation of Greek units that would fight against the Ottoman fleet.

Another purpose of the exhibition was to highlight the naval sites, the historical islands and the events and persons who played a decisive role in the Naval Race.

The contribution of Piraeus Bank

Piraeus Bank was a valuable supporter of the exhibition. The bank supported the organization and realization of the exhibition. He also undertook the creation of the commemorative medal of the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece/National Historical Museum.

Thus, visitors and residents of the islands through which the exhibition passed, had the opportunity to see and participate in the relevant anniversary events that took place. Their organization was undertaken by local organizations and Piraeus Bank.

The scientific album entitled "The Naval Race of 1821" uniquely complemented the EPANACYCTACi '21 exhibition. It is a publication of IEEE/EIM with the contribution of the "Maria Tsakos" Foundation.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that the floating exhibition was distinguished among the events organized for the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution.
