Poros - An island worth visiting in Autumn months
Poros is an island that won't disappoint you, no matter the time of year you choose to visit. In fact, autumn suits Poros exceptionally well. So, if you're looking for a destination for an autumn getaway before winter arrives, you're on the right track. Don't forget that you also have the option to explore Poros through the One Day Cruise.
In just one hour from the port of Piraeus, if you choose the dolphin, you will reach the port of Poros. If you take the conventional ferry, it will take a little longer. Its connection to the port of Piraeus is regular on weekdays and weekends throughout the year. So, you don't need to worry about finding tickets. The island's natural beauty in the Saronic Gulf has attracted many artists, such as Giorgos Seferis, Kostis Palamas, and the American author Henry Miller, who made it their refuge.
Essentially, Poros consists of two islands: the volcanic microcosmic Sphairia, where the center of the island is located today, and the much larger Kalavreia. There, you can find the Sanctuary of Poseidon, offering a stunning view of the Poros Strait reaching the shores of the Peloponnese. Significant attractions of the island also include the Russian Naval Base, the Clock Tower from where you can overlook the entire island, the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, and the Folklore Museum. For a bit of extra adventure in the midst of autumn, reach the Dana Lighthouse perched on a rugged rock at the entrance of Poros Bay.
The island is also suitable for hiking, with many interesting paths allowing visitors to explore it better. Even if you don't dare to dive into the sea, take a stroll to Mikro and Megalo Neorio, Askelia and the Love Harbor. These are the most famous beaches on the island that buzz with people in the summer.
Finally, dedicate some hours for a visit to the famous Lemon Forest, with lemon and orange trees and purchase related products from local stores. It is one of the most beautiful areas in Greece and has been declared a protected area. Located on the shores of the Peloponnese, you can reach it by sea taxi or boat.
