An International Festival Honoring Nikos Kazantzakis Unfolds in Hydra

From July 6th to 8th, 2023, an internationally acclaimed festival dedicated to Nikos Kazantzakis will grace the Historical Archive-Museum of Hydra. The festival enjoys the patronage of the Region of Attica and is a collaborative effort between the Eleni Kazantzakis Mobile Museum, the Hydra Museum, and the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum in Myrtia, Crete – the birthplace of the renowned author.

The Exhibition

The eponymous exhibition offers a unique glimpse into the world of Nikos Kazantzakis. It showcases personal artifacts, rare manuscripts, and letters that have remained veiled from the public eye until now. Visitors will step into the daily life of the author, experiencing the rhythm of his typical day, replete with fresh ideas, inspirations, emotions, and the profound love he shared with his adored wife.

The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum contributes to the event with the mobile exhibition "Nikos Kazantzakis: Life and Work," offering biographical insights and presenting information about his body of work through visual displays. The grand finale of the exhibition, slated for the last day of August, is the Vamos Orchestra concert titled “Musical Stigmata.” This musical journey through the times and places that shaped Nikos Kazantzakis' life includes operas, operettas, songs, and melodies composed by renowned European artists. The concert marks the 40th anniversary of the Museum in Crete.

Parallel Events

Throughout the festival, parallel events will take place on the idyllic island of Hydra, featuring screenings of films based on Nikos Kazantzakis' literary works:

  • "Zorba the Greek" directed by Michalis Kakogiannis,
  • “The Last Temptation of Christ” directed by Martin Scorsese,
  • “He Who Must Die” directed by Gilles Dassin.

Additionally, a musical and theatrical adaptation of Niki Stavrou's book "Oi brodofades," accompanied by musicians, will be performed. The festival also includes presentations from organizations dedicated to promoting the legacy of Nikos Kazantzakis worldwide.

For those fortunate enough to be on the island during this time, a visit to the exhibition is an absolute must.
