Traditional Recipe: Hydra Almond Sweets
A traditional sweet treat from Hydra is almond sweets. You can find them everywhere on the island, but the locals particularly cherish them during official events such as weddings and baptisms. However, it's also a dessert you can easily make on your own. Unless you choose to purchase the authentic ones on-site by taking a one-day cruise with One Day Cruise!
Ingredients for Hydra Almond Sweets:
- 300g peeled, ground almonds or commercially ground almonds
- 1 cup of sugar
- 5 tablespoons fine semolina
- 300g powdered sugar for dusting
- ½ cups of orange blossom water
- Butter
- Cloves
Instructions:
- Mix the almonds with 2 tablespoons of sugar until they form a paste.
- Add the remaining sugar, semolina, and 6 tablespoons of orange blossom water.
- Stir the mixture until it forms a soft dough. If it's too tight, add 1-2 extra tablespoons of orange blossom water.
- Take a small amount of the dough, about the size of a walnut, and shape it into a small pear shape.
- Repeat this process until you finish the dough.
- Place a clove on top of each piece.
- Once the dough is finished, place all the pieces in a buttered baking dish.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for 20 minutes.
- Allow them to cool, then dip them in powdered sugar.
- Wait a few minutes and coat them with more sugar.
