It's hard to associate the islands with winter. And yet, even a weekend on a nearby Argosaronic island is enough to recharge your batteries and rejuvenate. Don't wonder what you can do there at such a time. Aegina has many permanent residents, so you won't feel for a moment that you are shipwrecked on some remote island. Get some ideas for a winter excursion in Aegina to spend your time beautifully and productively.
Generally
You can reach Aegina within 1 hour and 10 minutes from the port of Piraeus. Throughout the year exhibitions and events take place on the island that will rightly attract your attention. Its natural beauty, the "bare" pistachio trees, the mansions and the scattered houses of the captains prove that even winter has color and character on the island.
Temple of Aphaia and museums
In the winter in Aegina you will find the time to do what you could not if you went in the summer when the activities are mainly about the sea. Thus, it is the ideal time to visit the Temple of Aphaia Athena on top of a 160m hill on the eastern side of the island. It is one of the two best preserved ancient temples in the world. After you've had your fill of views, oxygen and experiencing its imposing aura, head to the island's museums. In just two days you can turn everything around. Spend time at the Archaeological Museum next to the port in the temple of Kolona with exhibits from the archaeological site of the area. Continue with the Historical and Folklore Museum inside the town of Aegina, a few meters from its port. Finally, it is also worth a stop at the Museum of the sculptor Christos Kapralos, which functions as an annex of the National Gallery. It houses sculptures in wood, porolite and marble, samples of micro-sculpture in clay and bronze, as well as paintings crafted in Aegina.
Hiking and trails
For hiking enthusiasts, Aegina is a favorite hiking destination with many marked and easy trails. The time required to cross them varies from 40 minutes (e.g. Paleochora) to 6-7 hours (tour of Mount Hellani). Climbing, descending, stopping for a picnic and resting, even cycling, hiking in Aegina can become the purpose of your trip there.
Time for fish
Did you know that Aegina is famous for its good fish? Many Athenians go to the island to get good quality fish at very favorable prices. The fish taverns are a constant value on the island even in winter when the locals will pamper you twice!
