The island of Moni is located just ten minutes by boat from the cape of Perdika in Aegina, on the north of the Saronic Gulf. There is also a connection with the port of the island. It is an uninhabited island, with great geophysical interest and rich fauna. It belongs to the Holy Monastery of Chrysoleontissa in Aegina. Moni is the ideal destination for nature lovers, for those who love hiking ... and those who wish to discover the wildlife on the island of Moni!

It has many points that one can discover. It has no permanent residents, since overnight stay there is prohibited. But only visitors, who in the afternoon necessarily take the return boat. The only permanent residents of the Monastery are the wild animals, which are now fully acquainted with humans, move among them and are very friendly.

For the story

The monastery belonged from 1960 to 1990 to the Hellenic Travel Club, whose members brought to the island the wild animals that live there now. They are not few at all and make up the protected ecosystem of the island. Since 1962, the Monastery has been a Park for natural game breeding.

The fauna

Squirrels, impressive peacocks and deer roam freely in the forest. While ibex, perched on the rocky parts of the island, quench their thirst with sea water. Seagulls and crabs live on the crystal clear shores and rocks of the Monastery. In the past, there were also hares and pony ponies that did not survive.

The island looks split in two. Its southeast side is barren with many rocks. On the other hand, the northwest is drowned in the vegetation that almost touches the sea. On this side there is an organized beach during the summer months. The highest point of the Monastery, where the German observatory is located, offers a magnificent view of the Saronic Gulf. You can get there by following a verdant path consisting of wild olive trees, spruce and cedar, thus closing a beautiful day in nature.
