Hydra is one of the islands of the Saronic Gulf famous for its art and exhibitions. It is an attraction for tourists who love art. Specifically, Hydra hosts major art exhibitions every year on the initiative of the collector Pauline Karpida at the Hydra Workshop, by the artist Dimitris Antonitsis at the Hydra School Project, operating in the old Gymnasium, at the Shakhtouri Mansion and by the collector Iakhtanou DESTE Foundation.
Hydra is an island of large families with history and nautical tradition. The brothers Lazaros and George Kountouriotis, members of an old maritime family on the island, were distinguished in politics, shipping, the arts and commerce. They both played an important role in the Civil War of 1823-1825. Both Kountouriotis houses in Hydra are now open to the public.
Famous for its maritime history and cosmopolitan life, Hydra has much to be proud of, and one of its treasures is its renowned mansions. These grand houses are a testament to the wealth of their owners, many of whom were prominent shipowners who played significant roles in Greece's illustrious history. There are approximately 30 mansions and 300 houses of captains that immediately capture one's attention upon setting foot on the island. A visit to Hydra with One Day Cruise provides an excellent opportunity to admire these mansions up close!
